Components of a Press Release

Who: identifies who the release is about, typically a company or individual
What: the subject matter of the release (event, announcement, award)
When: the date the subject occurred or will occur
Where: the location the subject did or will occur
Why: why readers should care. This is the most important. There must be an apparent reason the reader should take interest in the release.

The Importance of Keywords
in Your Press Release

book

You already know how press releases on your company's news or accolades can boost awareness of your brand, but what do you know about keywords? David Meerman Scott, in his book, The New Rules of Marketing & PR, tells us to create your press releases based on your customers' problems:

"A great way to start thinking like a publisher and to create news releases that drive action is to focus on your customers' problems and then create and deliver news releases accordingly. Use the words and phrases that your buyers use. Think about how the people you want to reach are searching, and develop news release content that includes those words and phrases."

Not sure how to figure out what keywords apply? Think of how you describe what your company does. Boil that down to a few words. What words are left? Those are likely your keywords.

For That's Great PR, we write press releases about our clients' recent awards and accolades.
Press releases
Awards
Accolades

From this list, we can brainstorm more keywords our future clients might be searching for:
Write press releases
Press release
News release
Awards press release
Recent news coverage

PR Tips:  Don't overlook both singular and plural words.  People search for both, so use both.

Once you have your keywords, sprinkle your press release with these words.  This will help the search engines assist people in finding you as the solution to their problem!
